This Centre aims at understanding Indian partition and demographic change and migration influencing the mentalities of the regions where the migrants are settled and the overall influence of the experience passed down through recollection of experiences both horrifying and emotional associated with the process. It will build oral trajectory of partition narrative by contextualizing the process and pattern of the displaced. The Centre would document how the migrants have responded to new language, culture, new economic and social hierarchies. The primary objective of the centre is to record the experience of both first-hand narrators and the ones who have received these stories from their elders. In the process, it will map the social and economic mobility of the refugees and their contribution to their new homes as well as the linkage of the refugee settlers to the culture of the host communities, their rituals, rites, language and social behaviour. The Centre will focus on studying the nature of violence, participation of land-owning classes like patwari, muaddam local zamindar in forceful possession of agricultural land during partition chaos. It aims to study caste hierarchy in refugee settlement and land grants, evacuee property and rehabilitation of the refugees in this area. The unheard voices in partition narratives both women and Dalits will also be documented. This Centre also aims to start an oral history of partition in University Campus to indulge in outreach to its surrounding areas and record partition’s stories and digitalize the experiences.
