The Centre for Physical and Mathematical Sciences (CPMS) has started from the session 2013-14 with an aim to prepare young students for career in physics and also initiate research activities on cutting edge topics having direct relevance to current science and technologies. The centre also plans to promote research in fundamental topics keeping an eye on the subjects of Physics. The main objective is to provide strong foundation to the students through basic as well as applied courses. In addition, this centre is trying to create an environment of scientific excellence where every member will be given ample opportunities to excel in their field. Teaching and research are complementary to each other in creating healthy, vibrant and productive academic environment. At present, the centre has faculty members who are involved in high quality theoretical as well as experimental research in thrust areas. This will motivate the students who plan to make career in physics. The CPMS is striving to be recognized as a Centre of Excellence in education and research on national as well as international level. The centre aims to create a beneficial impact on nearby educational communities by providing advanced education and research. The CPMS has started M. Sc. in Physics with specialization in Nanophysics and M. Phil. programme in Physics. The Nanophysics specialization involves the techniques to fabricate small size materials in order to study physics at nanoscale. Furthermore, it will explore the properties and technological applications of modern functional, nanostructured and nanocomposite materials. These post-graduation programmes are aimed to develop the expertise to handle Nanophysics related issues in future. The programmes have balanced semester-based course structure with flexible seamless curricula which emphasize interdisciplinary nature of science in the 21st century and promote exploration, innovation and research.

Research Highlights

The faculty members associated with the Centre are involved in high quality theoretical as well as experimental research in thrust areas such as deposition and characterization of thin films, synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials, materials processing of nanocrystalline/nanocomposite through various routes and their structural, surface and thermal analysis, dielectric and electro-optical properties of liquid crystal materials, liquid crystal based biosensors etc. The CPMS has procured some important equipment such as microwave synthesis monowave, pH meter, electronic balance, hydraulic press for synthesizing variety of nano-materials like nanoparticles, nanotubes, quantum dots, etc.

Centre for Physical and Mathematical Sciences is equipped with instruments such as Microwave Synthesis, Monowave, Digital Micro balance Bench top pH Meter, Vacuum Oven, Manual Hydraulic Pressure and Function Generator.
